Dear Mom, What kind of music should I play - my guest list is a little older than usual?

Great question Darby - Because when the crowd leans into their 50s, 60s, and 70s—you can’t just wing it and hope for the best.  Remember that you’re not trying to impress them with your taste. You’re trying to host them well.

Sometimes I know exactly what mood I want—relaxed, elegant, kind of fun—but I don’t always know which songs will get me there.  So, when you asked about music for a party with people who are 30 to 70ish… I called in an expert.

Artist and curator Andi Ahedo collaborated with me to create the playlist.  It’s good - bridges the generations without feeling scattered. It's thoughtful, refined, and fun to listen to. Its what a good playlist sounds like for this group.

When I heard it, I imagined-
Mojitos on the terrace. Sun on our faces. Tapas on a long buffet. Maxi dresses. Dangling earrings. A citrusy gelato for dessert. A candlelit table with a cheeky place card question at each setting. Fruit and bright flowers tucked between the candles…people are smiling, laughing, cheeks flushed…lingering.

That’s what this playlist feels like to me. You’ll have your own kind of vision and it will be great.

So, if you’re unsure what music to play for an older guest list, this is a safe, gracious place to start.

If you make your own, keep this in mind:

·      Timeless voices: Think Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald, Nora Jones, James Taylor, Van Morrison…

·      Keep the volume low. Its background. Let conversation lead.

·      Choose a smooth tempo.

·      Save the experimental playlist for the younger crowd.

Here’s a link to the playlist is in my bio. Let me know what you think.

I love you,

Mom
